The Mecca of Orchids is in Bräcke Ängar
Bräcke Ängar is a small nature reserve tucked along Road 164 between Åmål and Bengtsfors, just outside Edsleskog. When you arrive at the modest parking area, you might question your destination. It’s only after passing through the heavy wooden gate and beginning your ascent up the hillside that the reserve’s quiet magic begins to unfold.
In July—if you time your visit as I did—the meadows greet you with a vibrant sea of wildflowers: daisies, campanulas, bluebells, buttercups, and countless others sway gently in the summer breeze. The path winds upward through scattered hazel thickets and broad-leaved trees, guiding you through layers of life and color.
At the summit, a breathtaking reward awaits: a rich tapestry of orchids in bloom. Among them, the sweet-scented fragrant orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea), the striking early purple orchid (Orchis mascula) and the delicate lesser butterfly orchid (Platantherabifolia). Bees, butterflies and beetles flit busily among the blossoms, and if you're lucky, you might also spot the elusive field gentian (Gentianellacampestris)—still on my list for the coming season.
Each visit to Bräcke Ängar reminds me of world gone by: a time before industrial agriculture, when people worked the land with care, tending and scything meadows for their cows, sheep, and goats. In doing so, they unwittingly nurtured a thriving web of life. That legacy lives on here—in every flower, every hum, and every breeze.
